Tom Hanks is Nora Ephron's 'Lucky Guy' on Broadway

By Alicia Lutes, Hollywood.com Staff

Broadway is about to get real lucky, thanks to Nora Ephron. Asking if it is possible for Tom Hanks to continue having firsts in his long and impressive career is like asking how is it that cheese is the most delicious thing on the planet (the answer is: we don't know, it just happened that way, and we're real glad it did). And true to form, Hanksy himself is out to prove he is one of the world's top humans by making his Broadway debut in Ephron's new play Lucky Guy.

The show revolves around the character Mike McAlarry (Hanks), a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who was well known for his sometimes-controversial coverage of police corruption and crime in New York in the 1980s. According to the official announcement, the play itself will focus on ""the story of McAlary's meteoric rise, fall and rise again, ending with his coverage of the Abner Louima case for which he won the Pulitzer Prize, shortly before his untimely death on Christmas Day, 1998."" Lucky Guy was one of Ephron's last works, penned at the time of her death. It will be directed by George C. Wolfe.

Long-time buddies and collaborators before her death in June, Ephron and Hanks previously collaborated on the oh-so-popular films Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail. Ephron's previous stage plays include Imaginary Friends and Love, Loss, and What I Wore (which she co-wrote with her sister, Delia).
