KALAMAZOO (WKZO) – House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton calls for the elimination of oil-and-gas tax breaks if green energy subsidies are also removed.
Upton made the comments during a 6th District debate held Monday night on Western Michigan University’s campus. Along with challenger Mike O’Brien (D-Mich.), the candidates were asked to respond to the question, “Both of you say you are in favor of an 'All of the above' energy policy. Can you please help voters differentiate your positions on energy and will your plan include involving hydro-fracking as a method of obtaining natural gas?”
Aligning with Governor Romney’s proposal just a week before to get rid of billions of dollars in tax breaks for oil industries, Upton said, “I’m for putting all of these on an even footing. Let’s look at the oil and gas subsidies, let’s take them away. Let’s let them compete just like everyone else at the same level. We can do that with the tax code to take those special provisions away.”
Watch above for full answers from both candidates as they debate for a seat in the U.S. House representing Michigan’s 6th District.
