Black Friday off to a generally safe start in West Michigan with a few exceptions

UNDATED (WKZO) -- Portage Police report a busy but orderly start to the shopping season with few incidents to report.

The Holiday shopping season is underway after getting off to a rocky start at the Woodland Mall in Kentwood, as they are reporting as many as six arrests after a couple of fights broke out , the first around 1:30 a.m. Police used pepper spray before taking at least two people away in handcuffs.

An hour later four teens were arrested for also fighting near the food court. The Day at the Woodland Mall concluded with a shooting near the bus stop outside the mall. It’s not clear who did the shooting around 7:40, or what they were shooting at. They did find some expended shells near the location.

Long lines were reported at other locations with few problems.

Not the case at one clothing store outside Holland.Things got absolutely frightening when two shoplifters were confronted outside an Old Navy Store in Holland Township, they dropped their bags and jumped into their van, and when the Store Detective tried to get their license number, they drove up to him, got out and grabbed at the bags, drawing a gun to make him give them up. Ottawa County Deputies were able to intercept the van and the pair were taken into custody. They found items stolen from a number of stores inside the van.
