Tigers Miguel Cabrera named American League MVP

DETROIT (WKZO) -- The MVP is staying in Detroit.  Tigers 3rd baseman Miguel Cabrera was named American League MVP by the Baseball Writers Association of America Thursday.  Cabrera led the American League with a .330 batting average, 44 home runs and 139 RB to become the first player to win the Triple Crown since Boston's Carl Yastrzemski in 1967.

Cabrera follows up an MVP victory from Tigers ace Justin Verlander in 2011.  They become the first Tigers to win the award consecutively since Ty Cobb did it 3 straight times from 1917 to 1919.

Cabrera's Tigers teammate Justin Verlander tweeted at 7:00pm following the announcement:

Best player in baseball...THE MVP @MiguelCabrera #calleditinapril
