WASHINGTON (WKZO) -- The meningitis outbreak across the country is putting the FDA in the spotlight.  Federal and state health regulators are calling on Congress to bolster federal oversight of compounding pharmacies.

The FDA says it faces legal restrictions as far as regulating such pharmacies as the New England Compounding Center.  The Massachusetts facility is at the core of the outbreak which has infected nearly 440 people and killed 32 across 19 states.

Hearings are being held this week on Capitol Hill concerning the deadly fungal meningitis outbreak connected to a compounded steroid.

In Michigan, there have been 129 reported cases in the outbreak, resulting in nine deaths.
