Fix The Debt rally held in Lansing to put pressure on lawmakers

LANSING, MI (WTVB) - Sporting bumper stickers touting "Red Ink Stinks," a coalition of political, business and community interests came together Wednesday in Lansing to offer their support to Michigan's federal officials and to encourage them to avert the fiscal cliff and address the nation's long-term debt. Former Senate Majority Leader Ken Sikkema said no other issue is as urgent or important to our country as addressing both the immediate and long-term debt problems the U.S.currently faces.

The Fix the Debt Coalition Michigan Chapter is springing up as part of a national campaign to urge federal elected officials to avert the so-called fiscal cliff -- a combination of federal tax cuts being phased out and automatic spending cuts being phased in at the beginning of the year. The combined tax law changes and spending cuts that comprise the "fiscal cliff" are expected to reach $600 billion next year according to the campaign. Helping to launch the effort included representative from the Michigan Association of School Boards, the Small Business Association, and the Michigan Municipal League.
