Red Cross under criticism for slow Hurricane Sandy relief efforts

LONG ISLAND, NY  (WKZO) --   The Red Cross has been criticized for its slow response to getting supplies into stricken areas after Hurricane Sandy came thru.  Organizers say traffic congestion kept them from reaching the coast line as quickly as they had hoped. The Red Cross’s Dan Halyburton, who is working on Long Island, says now the supplies are pouring in and they have set up huge shelters in auditoriums and gymnasiums that can handle 10-thousand people at a time.  He says they have 70 emergency response vehicles with about a thousand pounds of food on each, traveling out into neighborhoods

He says what a makes this different is the immense size of the damaged area which stretches for five states, the intensity of the damage itself,  and the fact that  it’s one of the most densely populated areas in the nation.
