LANSING, Mich (WLMI) Kipp Schutz smashed a three-run walk-off double in the Lansing Lugnuts’ (22-13, 69-35) 11-10 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks (18-17, 53-52) on Sunday afternoon on Jackson Field.
The Lugnuts battle back from 5-0, 7-5 and 10-8 deficits to clinch a series victory against the Silver Hawks.
Lansing loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth with no outs against Silver Hawks closer Jake Barrett (Loss, 0-2). Barrett struck out a pair before Schutz delivered the game-winning double.
Shawn Griffith (Win, 1-0) allowed one hit and pitched a scoreless ninth inning for Lansing.
The Lugnuts and Silver Hawks combined to score 22 runs and tally 23 hits. Lansing left 14 runners on base and went 7-for-22 with runners in scoring position.
Kenny Wilson reached in five of his six plate appearances, stole a franchise-record-tying three bases and scored a trio of runs. Both Chris Peters and Shane Opitz delivered three hits apiece. Chris Hawkins, Kevin Patterson and Schutz added two hits apiece.
Blake McFarland started the game for the Lugnuts and worked four innings, allowing nine hits, giving up four runs, walking one and striking out none.
Silver Hawks starter Archie Bradley struck out a career-high eleven and cruised through the first four innings. He was knocked out in a five-run fifth inning by the Lugnuts. Bradley gave up five total runs, four hits while walking four.
The Lugnuts go for the sweep in the finale of the three-game series on Monday, July 29th, at 7:05 p.m. Aaron Sanchez (8-2, 2.27) will be on the mound for the Lugnuts. J.R.
