Lugnuts Double-Up Loons On Independence Day

LANSING, Mich (WLMI)  Gustavo Pierre mashed a two-RBI double, highlighting a six-run eighth inning in the Lansing Lugnuts’ (7-6, 53-28) 8-4 come-from-behind victory over the Great Lakes Loons (5-8, 39-44) in front of 10,512 at Cooley Law School Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Lugnuts trailed by two in the eighth with two runners on when the Loons brought  in their closer Yimi Garcia (Loss, 4-2) to face Andy Burns (1-for-4), who whacked an RBI double to bring Lansing within a run. With the infield in, Kevin Pillar delivered a game-tying RBI infield single.  A strikeout and an intentional walk later, Pierre banged the go-ahead two bagger off the left field wall.

Lansing added a pair of insurance runs when Loons second baseman Jesus Arredondo muffed a ground ball hit by Jon Berti, closing out the scoring.

Lansing starter Anthony DeSclafani tossed five innings, allowed eight hits but only three walks while striking out two and walking none.

The Lugs bullpen allowed just one run over four innings of work. Tyler Ybarra gave up a run over two innings and struck out three. Blake McFarland (Win, 4-2) struck out two in a perfect eighth inning. Ajay Meyer turned in a perfect ninth and struck out a pair as well.

Chris Hawkins went 2-for-4 with an RBI; Kevin Pillar turned in his fourth straight multi-hit game; Gustavo Pierre has delivered three doubles in the last three games.

Lansing continues their three-game homestand on Thursday, July 5th for a 7:05 p.m. game against the Great Lakes Loons featuring LAFCU Fireworks and a Labatt Blue Light Thirsty Thursday .  Lefty Justin Nicolino (3-1, 1.74) starts for the Lugs. The Loons will start right-hander Arismendy Ozoria  (4-4, 4.37).
