COLDWATER (WHTC) - A 32-year-old man who is serving life in prison for killing three teenagers in Allegan County's Lee Township in 1999 tried to break out early Christmas Day, but was caught. Officials say Jamasa Derring and another man tried to escape from the Lakeland Men's Correctional Facility. They wore several layers of clothing to try to protect their bodies from the razor wife, but they hadn't counted on setting off the motion detectors. Derring and Michael Jackson were recaptured before they could get over the fence. Derring will be charged with escape. He can't be given any more time on top of the his life sentences, but he'll be reassigned to a higher-security prison.
