Fear grips parents and students as Kalamazoo school administrators call time out

by

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) --  Kalamazoo Public School kids got an extra day of winter break and it wasn’t because of yesterday’s wimpy winter storm. The district issued a brief statement Thursday night citing "heightened concerns" but not mentioning any specific threats. Alex lee explained they are taking the step to help calm community anxiety.

It wasn't only Kalamazoo Schools, five school systems in Battle Creek and other schools scattered all over the state did the same thing.

But some may have their anxiety lifted over the winter break. Officials say they plan to spend it tracking those responsible for initiating any threats or spreading rumors.

A Fraser High School student could be spending Chrismas in Juvenile Detention, after he was taken into custody on charges of making a false threat of terrorism after allegedly saying he was going to shoot people.

A fellow student told the principal about the comments andFraser Public Schools Superintendent Dr. David Richards says they did not hesitate to act.Penalties can range from 5 to 20 years for making threats under new anti-terrorism laws. It’s no longer considered a prank.
