KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Kalamazoo Public Schools will be closing Friday, joining a number of other schools who have been trying to cope with prank threats, the mood after the assault on Sandy Hook Elementary, and for some districts, even the Mayan Doomsday rumors.
The district issued this statement:.
‘Given heightened concerns in communities across the state and in Kalamazoo we understand that some of our students and families are uneasy. We feel thatclosing the district for one additional day in the holiday break would calm a lot ofthe anxiety in our community, and that it’s the right thing to do’.
We told you about Genessee county Schools closing yesterday, as threats of gun violence set off a frenzy on social media, whipping up a panic. Now it’s hitting closer to home with all Battle Creek area schools also closing down because of several undisclosed threats and fears about security.
Battle Creek Public, Harper Creek, B.C. Catholic, Lakeview and Pennfield schools have all cancelled their school day. There have also been issues in Allegan, Fennville and Wayland schools.
Combined with the weather and the jitters parents feel after the assault on Sandy Hook Elementary, they decided it was a good idea to begin the Winter break a day early.
They plan to spend the winter break tracking down the rumors and the texts to try and identify who was making the threats, and who were spreading the rumors.
