MUSKEGON COUNTY (WKZO) -- A West Michigan landmark, The Michillinda Lodge caught fire and was all but destroyed early Sunday morning. The lakeshore resort which began its life 116 years ago as a summer home for a large Chicago family has been thru several transformations since then.

13 of the 15-fire departments in Muskegon County responded to the blaze which presented a challenge to fight according to Norton Shores Deputy Chief Bob Gagnon, because there are no hydrants. They had to pump water out of the lake.

The lodge had been closed for the winter. There were five workmen who were doing some remodeling staying there, but all escaped without injury.

They believe a space heater is to blame for the fire, but it remains under investigation.The heat from the lodge damaged the exteriors of two buildings on either side. The owners will likely rebuild, but no decisions have been made yet.
