DAYTON (WLMI) A bases-loaded, seventh-inning walk by Shawn Griffith to Ryan Wright pushed across the decisive run in the Dayton Dragons’ (14-23, 44-63) 5-4 series-opening victory over the Lansing Lugnuts’ (23-14, 70-36) on Tuesday night at Fifth Third Field.
With the win, the Dragons ended the Lugnuts’ four-game winning streak and beat Lansing for the first time in eleven tries.
Griffith (Loss, 1-1) worked 2 1/3 innings out of the bullpen and allowed two runs on three hits while walking two.
Carlos Gonzalez (Win, 3-3) gave up four hits and one run in 1 1/3 inning. Carlos Contreras (Save, 13) relieved Gonzalez with one out in the eighth and the potential go-ahead runs in scoring position by retiring the only two Lugnuts he faced.
The Lugnuts as a team hit five doubles. Kipp Schutz went 2-for-4 with a two-RBI double in the third inning. K.C. Hobson (2-for-4), Gustavo Pierre (1-for-4, run), Shane Opitz (1-for-4, RBI), and Nick Baligod (1-for-4) all recorded two-baggers. Chris Peters added three hits, including a triple and two runs scored.
Aaron Munoz threw out three Dragons base stealers in the first two innings.
Lugnuts starter Noah Syndergaard allowed a career-high seven hits in 4 2/3 innings while striking out four and walking none.
Dragons starter James Allen struck out a career-high seven batters and walked one in six innings, while allowing three runs on seven hits.
The second game of the four-game series with the Dragons is Wednesday, August 1st at 7:00 p.m. Justin Nicolino (7-2, 2.52) will start for Lansing, Robert Stephenson (1-0, 0.00) will be on the mound for the Dragons.
