Grab your black mascara, corset and existential sadness! It's National Goth Day! Yo, I'll admit it.  I'm a sucker for good goth rock and metal.  The gloomier and gothier the better.

What follows are 6 tunes from 6 bands that'll serve as a gateway drug to the subgenre:

Sisters of Mercy - "Lucretia, My Reflection"

Most Goth lyric:  "Lucretia, my reflection, dance the ghost with me"

It doesn't get much more goth than S.O.M.  Lead vocalist Andrew Eldritch was never a fan of the label, but damn dude, when you sing like a vampire lord risen to feast on the living, WTF did you expect?

Also check out Floodland , or grab the greatest hits package, A Slight Case of Overbombing.

Bauhaus - "She's In Parties"

Most Goth lyric:  "Freeze frame, screen kiss, hot heads, lights and powder, It's patently obvious"

I've never claimed to be "troo goth", so I'm not going with "Bela Lugosi's Dead" as it's a bit long.  With "She's In Parties", Bauhaus conjures up images of darkness and decadence, two necessary ingredients for great goth.

Also check out "Bela Lugosi's Dead", but I warn you, it's a bit long.

Type O Negative - "Black No. 1"

Most Goth lyric:  "She's got a date at midnight - with Nosferatu, Oh baby, Lilly Munster - ain't got nothin' on you."

Here's the selection that's sure to tick off the "troo goths".  Written not so much as a homage to, but more to take the piss out of the goth scene, Type O's "Black No. 1" is a slice of dark snark.  Late lead singer Peter Steele's cavernous vocals seal the deal on this one.

Also check out "Christian Woman" and their excellent cover of Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl"

Ministry - "Everyday is Halloween"
No, that's not some other band called Ministry.  That's Al Jourgensen and Co. back when they sounded a bit more like The Pet Shop Boys than the industrial metal machine that they eventually became.  The lyrics read like a Goth Manifesto and the music is synthy and spooky with a record scratching breakdown thrown in for poops and giggles.  (A couple years ago, Al updated the song to fit Ministry's current sound.

Also check out the albums "The Land of Rape and Honey", "The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste", and "Psalm 69"

Most Goth lyric:  "and I dress this way just to keep them at bay, 'Cuz Halloween is everyday"

Concrete Blonde - "Bloodletting"

Featuring my future ex-wife Johnette Napolitano on lead vocals, this gothy swamp stomp is the perfect soundtrack to feasting on mortals and then weeping blood at the existential futility of immortality.

Also check out "Joey".  Your girlfriend will probably like it.

Most Goth lyric:  "You were a vampire and baby I'm walking dead"

The 69 Eyes - "Borderline"

This is a newer entry on the list.  The 69 Eyes have been around for a while, but this one's from their latest album "X".  The whole album's full of gothy goodness and a solid addition to your playlist.

Also check out pretty much anything else they've done.

Most Goth lyrics:  "Some nights we die, some nights we cry"

Honestly, I could go on forever about this subgenre.  We didn't even get to Joy Division, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult and about 700 other bands,  but the preceding songs should give you a good start.

Oh hell, why not one more:
