Mac D's Weekend Movie Guide (5/25/12)

Posted by Mac D on

Memorial Day weekend is a great time for me to catch up on movies.  I hear In Time calling my name.  This week wacky seniors in love, Will Smith returns in a suit, and the Tuskegee Airmen fly again.

These Are the Movies That Will Be Released on Friday May 25th, 2012
The Best Exotic Marigold HotelRated PG-13
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
That says Exotic not Erotic.  Seven British retirees travel to India with hopes of a cheaper retirement but that isn’t going to happen.  This romantic comedy stars Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson, and that kid from Slumdog Millionaire.  The Brits know how to make a romantic comedy and this cast has two Dames so I am interested.

Verdict – This cast is strong.  It might not make waves but should be entertaining.

Men in Black 3Rated PG-13
Men in Black 3
Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith return to fight aliens.  This time K is wiped from existence so J has to travel back in time to save him with help from a younger K (Josh Brolin).  All major players (minus the writer) return for this third installment.  I enjoyed MIB and MIB 2.  I thought the humor was dumb in a bad way for 2 but I still really enjoyed it.  Will Smith is a great comedic actor and Tommy Lee Jones being the straight man is equally good.  Let’s hope Josh Brolin can keep up.  I predict MIB3 will take down The Avengers at the box office.

Verdict – I need to see this NOW!  Anyone want to go?

Chernobyl DiariesRated R
Chernobyl Diaries
Six young people venture in to the Chernobyl area and find presumably zombies or mutants.  This is from the guy behind Paranormal Activity Oren Peli.  I think the documentary style will fit here as it will create more tension and terror.  I worry about more adult horror films coming out in the summer but some studio guy thinks this is good enough to compete.

Verdict – While MIB 3 is my first choice this is my second.  It look scary enough to want to see..

Box Office Top 5 Movies In The Country
1. The Avengers - Rated PG-13
2. BattleshipRated PG-13
3. The DictatorRated R
4. Dark Shadows - Rated PG-13
5. What to Expect When You’re ExpectingRated PG-13

YOU SUNK MY BATTLESHIP!  Battleship was made for over $200 million and only made $25 in the opening weekend.  It bombed.  How bad did it bomb?  Hasbro as delayed G.I. Joe Retaliation until 2013.  They say it is due to wanting to add 3D.  I believe it’s they want to separate any properties from Battleship.  The Avengers just keeps on making money.  2nd best 3rd weekend ever behind Avatar, fastest to $450 Million, and currently sits 5th in all time domestic grosses behind Star Wars Episode I, The Dark Knight, Titanic, and Avatar.  I believe it will surprise The Dark Knight before all is said and done.  BRING DARK KNIGHT RISES.

This Means War – Rated PG-13
This Means War
Tom Hardy and Chris Pine are CIA Spies that fight over Reese Whitherspoon.  The cast sounded good however they all just seemed to go through the motions.

Red TailsRated PG-13
Red Tails
George Lucas helped bring this new film about the Tuskegee Airmen to life.  The action sequences are worth the price of admission.

Next Week Sam Worthington is on a ledge, a fun horror movie IN 3D, and another Snow White movie this time with Thor.
