Changing up the format for the Weekend Movie Guide for this week. Since everyone around the station/ the world keeps on talking about it, how about I throw my two cents in.
Mac D’s Review of The Avengers - Rated PG-13
Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), The Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) join forces to stop Loki (Tom Hiddleston) from using the Tesseract (a.k.a. The Cosmic Cube) from bring a huge alien force to invade earth. Well its finally here. We were teased this movie all the way back in 2008’s Iron Man. The Avengers is much like any other Marvel movie. There is tons of humor, some great moments to get to know these characters more, and of course Stan Lee. The action is huge and fun to watch. I especially liked the new details and layers added to The Hulk and The Black Widow.
HOWEVER
While all of the characters get a chance to grow I felt that Thor and Iron Man did not have much to do. Sure Downey Jr is great and his Iron Man is everywhere but his storyline was barely there and finally finished at the end. While everyone else did some growing as characters Thor did not do anything. He came to stop Loki. That’s it. I also felt that there was too much action leading into the final battle. Basically that had one huge action sequence with all the characters that melted into the final battle and this all lasted for like 45 minutes or so. I could have used more Samuel L Jackson but then again EVERY MOVIE could use more Samuel L Jackson.
The Avengers was a great way to start the Summer Blockbuster season. While not perfect it was a fitting addition to the Marvel movie franchise. I would go as far as saying The Avengers is one of the best. Almost everyone else here at Q106 has seen it twice and so should you.
Verdict - The Dark Knight Rises has some major competition for Summer Movie of the year. The Avengers is great and I can’t wait for Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America 2, and The Avengers 2 - 9 out of 10
These are the movies that will be released on Friday May 11th, 2012
Dark Shadows - Rated PG-13
Tim Burton directs this adaptation of the classic gothic 70’s soap opera. Johnny Depp is Barnabas Collins a guy who is turned into a vampire centuries ago and is awoken in 1970’s to help save his ancestors. I am not a huge fan of how silly Dark Shadows looks based on the trailers. However it's Johnny Depp as a vampire in a movie directed by Tim Burton. I am very interested.
Verdict - Dark Shadows will get overshadowed by The Avengers and the fans of the cult series may not like what is in front of them but I think this looks entertaining.
Box Office Top 5 Movies In The Country
1. The Avengers - Rated PG-13
2. Think Like A Man – Rated PG-13
3. The Hunger Games – Rated PG-13
4. The Pirates! Band Of Misfits- Rated PG
5. The Lucky One – Rated PG-13
The Avengers opened up to a tune of $207 MILLION DOLLARS and $775 MILLION Worldwide. That’s a lot. It sets the all time opening weekend record for box office take and is also the fastest to $200 million. It has already out earned the Thor, Captain America, and Hulk movies. So yes there will be The Avengers 2. I wonder if The Dark Knight Rises will be able to equal this or even equal what the Dark Knight did when the new Batman movie is released in July. Summer is looking very interesting.

Underworld: Awakening - Rated R
I don’t recall asking for another Underworld movie but since Kate Beckinsale is in skin tight leather I will give it a pass. I have seen two Underworld movies and do not recall anything about them.
The Vow - Rated PG-13
A man and a woman get into a car accident and the woman loses all her memory. The man then tries to get the lady to remember him and love him again. Channing Tatum has never done anything for me. But then theres Rachel McAdams and she’s hot.
Tim And Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie - Rated R
This is Adult Swim’s second attempt to make a movie this time based on Tim And Eric’s Awesome Show Good Job. All the celebrities that have been on that show are in this movie. I never really loved Awesome Show Good Job and feel this is going to be too weird for my taste.
Next week Liam Neeson fights wolves, Borat does a movie I am actually interested in, and a board game that should not have been made into an alien invasion movie.
