Mac D's Weekend Movie Guide (3/23/12)

Posted by Mac D on

This week you have to fight to eat, Will Farrell in Spanish, and some of my favorite movies in 2011 are now on DVD.

These are the movies that will be released on Friday, March 23rd, 2012
The Hunger GamesRated PG-13
The Hunger Games
Based on the wildly popular books, The upper class force teens from the lower class to participate in “Hunger Games”.  Its a battle to the death with the winner receiving fame and fortune.  This movie is drawing comparisons to Twilight.  The only difference is that Hunger Games features a much stronger cast (Jennifer Lawerence, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, and Donald Sutherland).  The veteran actors have done Sci Fi before and know how to make it work.  Both seem melodramatic but Hunger Games seems to have that as only one of its components.

Verdict - Unlike Twilight I am willing to give Hunger Games a try.  I have already heard this is breaking box office records and the same people that sang the praises of Twilight are happy with Hunger Games.

Casa De Mi PadreRated R
Casa De Mi Padre
This film is a spoof of overly dramatic spanish language Telenovelas that sees Will Farrell have troubles keeping his father's ranch open due to money issues.  His brother is a rich businessman but things go south when Farrell falls for his sister in law.  Yes.  Casa De Mi Padre is entirely in Spanish with english subtitles.  You will get use to it.  I am hoping for a return of the Will Farrell from the mid 2000’s because some of his stuff as of lately is just not funny.  This film seems like a great opportunity for Farrell to be goofy and hilarious.

Verdict - I am happy for the subtitles because I do not speak Spanish.

Box Office Top 5 Movies In The Country
1. 21 Jump Street – Rated R
2. Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax – Rated PG
3. John Carter – Rated PG-13
4. Project X – Rated R
5. Act Of Valor – Rated R

21 Jump Street wins.  I am surprised by the lack of response to John Carter.  I think that the Disney marketing machine was not kicked up to full throttle but some of it may have to do with a unknown leading man.  Almost a month after its release Act of Valor is still hanging around.

Still In Theatres

The MuppetsRated PG
The Muppets
The Muppets was a lot better then I thought it would be.  I enjoyed it and it seemed to give Disney a nudge to revive these classic characters.  A sequel is already in the works.

Tinker Tailor Soldier SpyRated R
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Gary Oldman received a Oscar nomination playing a Spy brought out of retirement to catch a mole.  I enjoy everything Oldman is on my screen.

The Girl With The Dragon TattooRated R
