Mac D's Weekend Movie Guide (6/22/12)

Posted by Mac D on

During the small break I got to check out Prometheus.  It was a very interesting look at what happens when you find the beginning of humanity.  The similarities with Alien is small but noticeable.  I didn’t find it as scary as I thought I would but I still enjoyed it.  8.5 out of 10.

This week killing vampires, a new Pixar movie, and tons of R Rated fun on DVD

These Are the Movies That Will Be Released on Friday June 22nd, 2012
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire HunterRated R
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
Based on an alternative history this is the tale of secret Vampire hunter Abraham Lincoln and how his quest to rid America of Vampires lead to the civil war.  The premise alone is interesting.  Vampires in the 18th century are a cool idea.  The trailers make it seem like this is a more Matrix style action  but that only makes me more interested.  I don’t think I will find any scares but the action should make up for it.

Verdict – The only way I could be more excited for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is if Edward Cullen was brutally murdered in this film.

BraveRated PG
Brave
In Pixar’s latest movie, a young Scottish Princess has to save her mother and her kingdom after the Queen is turned into a bear.  This is the first time Pixar has done anything “fairy tale” related.  This is an original story but feels more like a traditional Disney film.  Is that a bad thing?  No clue.  With Pixar attached I am more likely to give this a try.

Verdict – I am skeptical about Brave but still want to see this.

Seeking a Friend For The End Of The WorldRated R
Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World
There is an asteroid about to hit the earth so Steve Carrell and Keira Knightley go off to look at Steve’s lost love.  This is a very interesting idea.  Let’s use the end of the earth not to tell a cool sci-fi story but rather a story about what you would do if you knew your life was coming to the end.  Carrell would be a good choice for something that should be funny but still have a lot of dramatic moments.  Due to this film I think I would go on a drinking binge if a asteroid was coming towards earth.

Verdict – Good date movie and one of those films that will make me think.

Box Office Top 5 Movies In The Country
1. Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted - Rated PG
2. Prometheus - Rated R
3. Rock Of Ages – Rated PG-13
4. That’s My Boy – Rated R
5. Snow White and The Huntsman - Rated PG-13

Madagascar 3 continues to roll which is not surprising at all.  Brave will knock it down this weekend.  However I am very surprised that Rock Of Ages only made $14 Million.  I really thought it could do better given the Music.  I am not surprised that Adam Sandler bombed again.  Sandler should just give up.

Still In Theatres
The Avengers - Rated PG-13, Battleship – Rated PG-13, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – Rated PG-13, Dark Shadows - Rated PG-13, The Hunger Games – Rated PG-13, Hysteria – Rated R, Men in Black 3 – Rated PG-13, What to Expect When You’re Expecting – Rated PG-13

These are the movies released on DVD Tuesday June 19th, 2012.
Project XRated R
Project X
Three rowdy teens have a huge party that is caught on tape.  Superbad this is not but I still want to see if it is as bad as everyone says it is.

Jeff, Who Lives At HomeRated R
Jeff, Who Lives At Home
Jason Segel lives at home with his mom and his brother Ed Helms tries to give him some direction in life.  Segel is having a pretty good run of movies since Forgetting Sarah Marshall.  This is more of a drama but I think Helms and Segel can carry it.

WanderlustRated R
Wanderlust
Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston looser their jobs and end up in a commune.  The cast, which includes Malin Akerman and Alan Alda, looks good on paper.  That’s good enough for me.

Next week Seth McFarlane tries his hand at live action comedy plus more we see more of Channing Tatum then I ever wanted to see.  EVER!
