Mac D's Weekend Movie Guide (2/24/12)

Posted by Mac D on

This week Navy kicks ass AGAIN, dirty hippies, and kitties on DVD.

These are the movies that will be released on Friday, February 24th, 2011
Act Of ValorRated R
Act Of Valor
Navy Seals (Played by real Navy Seals) go on a covert operation to save a kidnapped CIA officer.  Directors Mike McCoy and Scott Waugh worked with the Navy for a recruitment film.  This lead them to want to make a film about Navy Seals.  They realized early on that the advisers on the film were going to be better then any actors case so they used active duty Navy Seals.  How realistic is this film?  The Navy has final edit so they can cut out anything that might be a security risk.

Verdict – I am looking forward most to the action sequences that will be the selling point.  Hopefully acting and plot are passable enough not to drag down the film

GonePG-13
Gone
Amanda Seyfried was kidnapped by a serieal killer years ago.  Luckily for us she escaped.  Now the killers back and has grabbed Seyfriend’s sister.  From the trailers it looks like no one believes her that the killer is back and she looks un balanced.  This part intriques me.  For its own sake, Gone better be intense.

Verdict – Amanda Seyfried hasn’t made a movie I have enjoyed in a while.  I really hope Gone breaks the string.

Good DeedsRated PG-13
Good Deeds
Tyler Perry stars and directs this film about an executive who lives a life that his parents wanted to him.  A worker shows him a side of his life he never knew and opens his eyes.  It’s a Tyler Perry movie.  Regardless of what critics say people will see this.  I expect this to be just like every other Perry movie.
Verdict – The past couple of Tyler Perry movies have made me interested in see them.  Good Deeds looks to continue that trend.

WanderlustRated
Wanderlust
Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd are on a trip to Georgia.  Along the way they stop a Bed and Breakfast that turns out to be a hippie commune.  This cast includes Justin Theroux, Malin Akerman, Lauren Ambrose, Alan Alda, Jordan Peele, Kerri Kenney-Silver, and Ray Liotta.  This looks funny given the cast.  If it were not for Horrible Bosses I would think Aniston would hold this movie down but now I am not too sure.

Verdict – This will be the movie that no one watches in theaters but then loves it when it comes out on DVD.

Box Office Top 5 Movies In The Country
1. Safe House - Rated R
2. The Vow - Rated PG-13
3. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island - Rated PG
4. Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance – Rated PG-13
5. This Means War – Rated PG-13

Safe House picks up steam in the second week.  I have heard nothing but good things about Safe House that completely agrees with my own personal enjoyment.  Ghost Rider 2 and This Mean War underperformed on their way to bombing.

J EdgarRated R
J Edgar
This is Clint Eastwood’s biopic of J Edgar Hoover staring Leonardo Di Caprio.  Leo did well but everything else was confusing.

Tower HeistPG-13
Tower Heist
Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy lead a team to steal tons of money from Alan Alda.  This is a return to 80’s form for Murphy and should be fun enough for a quick look.

Puss in BootsRated PG
Puss In Boots
In prequel to the Shrek movies Puss tries to take down Jack and Jill and . . . HE SO DAMN CUTE I CAN’T LOOK AWAY!
