Mac D's Weekend Movie Guide (2/10/12)

Posted by Mac D on

This is the week I have dreaded.  This week sees the return of Star Wars to movie theaters.  15 years ago I would have been excited but now not so much.  Read my thoughts below plus the Rock vs tiny elephants, Rachel McAdams looses her memory, and vampires & werewolves I hate are on DVD.

These are the movies that will be released on Friday, February 10th, 2011
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island - Rated PG

This sequel to 2008’s Journey to The Center of The Earth is based on several classic literary tales including Treasure Island, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sean, and Gulliver's Travels.   Sean Anderson and his step father The Rock set out to find Sean’s long lost grandfather Michael Caine.  Journey 2 appears to be a very entertaining and acceptable family action film.  The Rock will be funny but still will kick a little ass. 3D will only enhance the experience.

Verdict - This should be entertaining but not entertaining enough to make me go out of my way to see it.

Safe House - Rated R

Safe House
A rouge ex-CIA agent (Denzel Washington) and a CIA Agent (Ryan Renolds) team up to find some dirty CIA agents.  Denzel is best when he is playing slightly off kilter characters.  He seems to be the bad guy but probably isn't.  If Washington is not too over the top it should be fun.

Verdict - Looks good and should be a good way to spend 90 minutes.

The Vow - Rated PG-13
The Vow
Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams get into a car accident.  Rachel looses all her memories and causes Tatum to get her to love him again.  Why is Rachel McAdams doing this film.  Her inclusion in this makes me wonder how good this actually is.  I am slightly interested in this due to her inclusion because she is generally good in anything.  Though I am not sure Channing Tatum can act his way out of a paper sack.

Verdict - I guess the GF won’t have to complain too hard to get me to the theaters.

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace in 3D - Rated PG
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menance in 3D
The Star Wars saga returns to theaters now in 3D as we see how Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi met.  I remember waiting in line for 6 hours to see this the first time. I grew up a Star Wars fan and I will die a Star Wars fan. I am all for Star Wars movies back in theaters for a short 3D run.  Similar to what Disney is doing with their animated films.  But however unlike Beauty And The Beast 3D or The Lion King 3D this seems more like a huge grab at money then a fan service before this hits DVD.  The marketing campaign has annoyed me to no end.  On my way to Joe Lewis Arena this past week I saw FIVE billboards for The Phantom Menace in 3D in a 10 mile range.  The product placement and all the other commercials have all rubbed me the wrong way too.  George Lucas you are killing your original fan base by continuing to milk these movies for all their worth.  I hope this is the last time I feel like I am getting used by Lucas . . again.  I could stand getting these back in theaters for a 3D run but I feel like your doing it for money and not for the fans.  Also the Phantom Menace sucks compared to all other Star Wars movies.  I dare you to fight me in the comments section.

Verdict - Out of principal I won’t see this unless they added a scene where Jar Jar Binks is killed in the most horrific way possible.  But then Attack Of The Clones won’t make sense (I mean make less sense).

A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas - Rated R
A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas
Just in time for Presidents Day.  I recently went back and watched #2 in this series and realized while these are not necessarily the best comedies out there they are fun and have heart.  NPH is in here too which is always good.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 -  Rated PG-13
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1
The end is near.  Not the end of society because they eat up these twilight movies but the end of the series.  Women might like you if this is in your collection but I would never ever watch it.

Next week some weird stuff on DVD, Nicholas Cage gets another crack at being a superhero and Chris Pine and Tom Hardy fight over Reese Witherspoon.  Why guys?  I think you can do better.
