It’s Friday the 13th so go watch a Friday the 13th Movie already. This week a horror movie that might actually be funny, Die Hard in space, and a movie that will divide America.
These are the movies that will be released on Friday April 13th, 2012
Cabin In The Woods – Rated R
A group of college kids go for a relaxing weekend in a cabin. Little do they know the cabin is controlled by scientists and loaded with evil creatures. This horror film is written by one of the writers of Cloverfield and Joss Whedon (Buff The Vampire Slayer, Firefly/ Serenity, and the upcoming Avengers). The premise seems like we will see some parody of reality shows but at the same time this looks legitimately scary. I am ready for the first Horror film of 2012 that I am genuinely excited to see.
Verdict – Critics are already comparing Cabin In The Woods to Evil Dead II in a positive manor. That’s good enough for me.
Lockout – Rated PG-13
Guy Pearce plays a man wrongfully imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. To gain his freedom he must rescue the president’s daughter from a prison overrun with its prisoners IN SPACE!!! I liked Lockout the first time I saw it. When it was call Escape From New York. Guy Pearce is a good enough actor to make this work. The trailers make his character Snow seems like John McClain in Die Hard. I could go with that. I don’t see Lockout being a huge movie but Pearce can make it watchable.
Verdict – Lockout is no where near the top of my list of movies to see in theaters but I am willing to give this a shot on DVD or eventually on TV when its replayed on FX 16 times a week.
October Baby – Rated PG-13
A 19-year-old girl has an emotional break down and then finds out she is adopted. She then sets out on the road to find her birth mother. This is a coming of age movie. Given the subject matter of a girl whose mother tried to abort her this is going to hit home for tons of people. There has not been an uproar about October Baby so hopefully its message is not heavy handed so the audience does not feel lectured to.
Verdict – October Baby wants to make you think which is the exact opposite of most of the movies released this week. I will see this but not right away.
The Raid: Redemption – Rated R
In this Indonesian action film, an elite SWAT team is tasked with running a raid on a apartment block that is controlled by the mob. Crowds around the world love The Raid. A lot of the foreign action films I have been exposed to are tons better then what ever crap Hollywood puts out. Although I question releasing this when Sony has an English langue remake in development.
Verdict – Hurray marital arts! Given The Raid: Redemptions reputation around the world I do want to check this out.
The Three Stooges – Rated PG
The Three Stooges Moe, Larry, and Curly (Chris Diamantopoulos, Sean Hayes, and Will Sasso) try to make some money to save their childhood orphanage. This movie is a good example of a philosophy “Characters are memorable because of the writing and not the actors.” Examples usually given are James Bond, Dracula, Batman, and Superman because dozens of actors have played these characters to great acclaim. However producers are now testing the waters. The recent Star Trek remake/envisioning is an example of this working. That movie was good and William Shatner didn’t play Kirk. However the Three Stooges where the creation of Moe Howard, Larry Fine, and Curly Howard. Their success was because of the originals stooges talent. After watching The Stooges on WWE Raw this past Monday I do see that these new guys are slightly funny (Sean Hayes did a very good job). But they are not the original stooges. I have a really bad feeling that the fans out there will turn on these actors for not being as good. This film’s only saving grace is kids who have no idea who The Three Stooges are and love it.
Verdict – Love this or hate this I do want to see The Three Stooges. I want to judge for myself if this film is a good idea or a very very bad idea.
Box Office Top 5 Movies In The Country
1. The Hunger Games – Rated PG-13
2. American Reunion - Rated R
3. Titanic (3D 2012 Re-Release) - Rated PG-13
4. Wrath Of The Titans – Rated PG-13
5. Mirror Mirror - Rated PG
The Hunger Games continues to roll racking in $300 million thus far. American Reunion is not performing as well has the other American Pie movie and will be considered a financial failure if it doesn’t hit $100 million (a mark the rest of the pie movies hit.) Titanic has now made $685 Million worldwide for the films life time. Its $30 million mark during the re-release is fine by me. Its modest success could pave the way for more re-releases, hopefully ones I want to see.
Still In Theatres
21 Jump Street – Rated R, Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax – Rated PG, Friends With Kids - Rated R, Jeff Who Lives At Home – Rated R, Salmon Fishing in The Yemen - PG-13

Meryl Streep won an oscar for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in this bio pic. That’s enough reasons for me to check this out.
The Darkest Hour – Rated PG-13
American tourists in Russia get caught in the midst of an alien invasion. Critics hated this but its an alien invasion movie so it gets a pass.
Next week Zac Efron toys with our emotions and proof that Tom Cruise is still allowed to work.
