Mac D's Weekend Movie Guide (4/6/12)

Posted by Mac D on

Its retro week as one of the top grossing movies ever gets a 3D rerelease, a sequel to my favorite sex comedy of the 90’s, and cute animals.  Is it still the 90’s?
These are the movies that will be released on Thursday, April 5th, 2012
Titanic (3D 2012 Re-Release) - Rated PG-13
Titanic
Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet fall in love on Titanic.  And then the ship goes down.  This is one of the biggest movies in history.  I am not against most any film being re relased in theaters.  Most movies should be enjoyed on the big screen with tons of people.  But why the 3-D?  I have grown tired of studios using the 3D gimick to sell more tickets.  I dont think this will look any better in 3D.

Verdict - When I saw this in 97 I was annoyed with all the 12 year old girls swooning over DiCaprio.  But 15 years later I think I will go to a Titanic showing to try to pick up chicks.

American Reunion - Rated R
American Reunion
The original cast from American Pie returns as the kids we grew up with come back home for their ten year High School reunion.  American Pie movies were beyond hillarious in the 90’s.  The first two hold up as some of my favorite comedies.  However I did not enjoy 3 (American Wedding) as much and I wonder if this brand of comedy is no longer funny.  It looks to be as gross and sex filled as ever.

Verdict - While I worry this is “going to the well once too often” American Reunion is one of those movies where i am not sure how good it is but an not wait to find out.

Salmon Fishing in The Yemen - PG-13

Salmon Fishing In The Yemen

In this romantic comedy Ewan McGregor gets hired to put water and salmon in Yemen while he falls in love with Emily Blunt.  Fish in the desert? that sounds wierd.  This ties into the current political climate in the middle east plus I enjoy just about everything Ewan McGregor does.

Verdict - Seems like a nice date movie.

Box Office Top 5 Movies In The Country
1. The Hunger Games – Rated PG-13
2. Wrath Of The Titans – Rated PG-13
3. Mirror Mirror - Rated PG
4. 21 Jump Street – Rated R
5. Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax – Rated PG

Hunger Games keeps on going almost breaking $250 Million.  At this rate I wonder if anything in April can topple Hunger Games?  Wrath Of The Titans is doing about half the business Clash did which isnt surprising. Perhaps the producers have realized that we do not more Titans.

Still In Theatres
Act Of Valor – Rated R, Friends With Kids - Rated R, Jeff Who Lives At Home – Rated R, John Carter – Rated PG-13, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island - Rated PG, Means War – Rated PG-13, A Thousand Words – Rated PG-13

These are the movies released on DVD Tuesday April 3rd, 2012
War Horse - Rated PG-13
War Horse
This story of a Horse and a boy finding each other in WWI got a Best Picture nomination.  Steven Spielberg knows how to toy with our emotions and even if War Horse was over looked in theaters it should be given a second chance on DVD.
We Bought a Zoo - Rated PG
We Bought A Zoo
Matt Damon stars as a father trying to get his family back together.  To accomplish this he buys a Zoo.  Yeah I don’t understand it either but hey I looks half way decent.
Next week a movie that I thought was going to be a bio pic. Merryl Streps latest oscar winner on DVD, and Joss Whedon’s horror film is finally released.
