Oscar Wrap Up

Posted by Mac D on

Another Academy Award show has come and gone.  It was slightly entertaining but very predictable.

Actress in a Supporting Role

My Pick - Hailee Steinfeld for "True Grit"
Winner - Melissa Leo for "The Fighter"

Other nominees were Amy Adams for "The Fighter", Helena Bonham Carter for "The King's Speech", Jacki Weaver for "Animal Kingdom"

The moment of the night came really early.  Kurt Douglas presented the award and acted like a ladies man even at his age.  It was fun to watch him even if it was hard to understand him at times.  Then Melissa Leo in a state of shock dropped an F Bomb.  It was great.  I am not too upset about not picking this correctly because it was a shot in the dark.

Mac D goes 0 for 1.  Not a good start.

Actor in a Supporting Role

My Pick - Christian Bale for “The Fighter”

Winner - Christian Bale for “The Fighter”

Other nominees were John Hawkes for “Winter’s Bone”, Jeremy Renner for “The Town”, Mark Ruffalo for “The Kids Are All Right”, Geoffrey Rush for “The King’s Speech”

WILL BATMAN HAVE A GIGANTIC BEARD IN THE NEXT MOVIE?  Bale won and gave a great speech.

Mac D goes 1 for 2.

Music (Original Score)

My Pick – Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for The Social Network

The Winner - Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for The Social Network

The other nominees were John Powell for "How to Train Your Dragon", Hans Zimmer for "Inception", Alexandre Desplat  for "The King's Speech", A.R. Rahman  for "127 Hours".

Yes the Nine Inch Nails frontman won an oscar.  I should have figured it was not going to be an awesome moment because Trent dressed like a normal person and then during his speech thanked his wife and said he was in shock.  I expected more of a specticle if they won.

Mac D goes 2 for 3

Directing

My Pick – Darren Aronofsky  for “Black Swan”

Winner – Tom Hooper for “The King’s Speech”

The Other Nominees were David O Russel for “The Fighter”, David Fincher for “The Social Network”, The Cohen Brothers for “True Grit”

Really?  Tom Hooper?  Really?  I still think Aronofsky did a far superior job to any of the other nominees. Everything in Black Swan clicked.  I am disappointed about Aronofsky lost.

Mac D goes 2 for 4

Actress in a Leading Role

My Pick - Natallie Portman for “Black Swan”

Winner - Natallie Portman for “Black Swan”

Other nominees were Annette Bening for “The Kids Are All Right”, Nicole Kidman for “Rabbit Hole”, Jennifer Lawrence for “Winter’s Bone”, Michelle Williams for “Blue Valentine”

Portman cries a lot in her speech.  Her performance made this easy to pick

Mac D goes 3 for 5

Actor in a Leading Role

My Pick - Colin Firth for “The King’s Speech”

Winner - Colin Firth for "The King's Speech"

Other nominees were Javier Bardem for “Biutiful”, Jeff Bridges for “True Grit”, Jesse Eisenberg for “The Social Network”, James Franco for “127 Hours”

It was a nice moment as Firth kept on referring to the need to get off of stage and dance but this one was never in question

Mac D goes 4 for 6

Best Picture

My Pick – The King’s Speech

Winner – The King’s Speech

The other nominees were Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The Kids Are All Right, 127 Hours, The Social Network, Toy Story 3, True Grit, Winter's Bone

The beginning of the night The King’s Speech was not winning many of the technical Oscars.  I had a feeling that it would take home the big awards at the end of the night.  And I was right.  I am glad that this was a mostly British crew.

Mac D goes 5 for 7.

Well I only missed two.  While I laughed I did not feel any real suspence as it seems the Oscars have gotten too easy to predict.  Well there is always next year.
