Mac D's Weekend Movie Guide for 8/26/11

Posted by Mac D on
This week a Paul Rudd is stupid, Zoe Sadana is pissed, and Mel Gibson ruins his career NOW ON DVD!

These are the movies that were released on Friday August 26th, 2011
Our Idiot BrotherRated R

Our Idiot Brother

Paul Rudd plays a moron who has to live with his three sisters (Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, and Emily Mortimer) after getting out of jail. I have always thought Paul Rudd was a good comedic talent.  This seems like a mixture of Comedy and Drama that might be up Rudds alley.  The three female leads are going to be a nice cherry on top.

Verdict – Seems like a renter only because though I feel it may be good nothing jumps out and grabs me.

Don’t Be Afraid of the DarkRated R
Don't Be Afriad Of The Dark
This is a remake of a 1973 Made for TV Movie (I never thought I would type that).  A young girl unleashes a monster in the house she is living in and only has Katie Holmes to protect her.  With Guillermo Del Toro’s (Pans Labyrinth, Hellboy) name was attached I was very excited about this.  Del Toro how ever did not direct this only write and produced.  I still think it could be a great Horror film that will be light on the gore.

Verdict – I hope this is a great horror film with out the gore but since Guillermo Del Toro didn’t direct I am very skeptical.

ColombianaRated PG-13
Colombiana
As a young girl Zoe Sadana watched as her parents were murdered infront of her.  Now an adult she is out for revenge.  I have high expectations for Colombiana.  This is written by the same duo that brought us great action films like The Fifth Element and Taken.  The Director Olivier Megaton only has Transporter 3 to his directing credit.  I do not think this will be as good as Taken if its in the same ballpark we should be in for a treat.

Verdict – This is the one new movie this week that I want to see immediately.

Box Office Top 5 Movies In The Country
1. The Help – Rated PG-13
2. Rise of the Planet of the Apes – Rated PG-13
3. Spy Kids: All The Time In The World In 4D – Rated PG
4. Conan The Barbarian – Rated R
5. The Smurfs – Rated PG

So all the new movies that came out last weekend BOMBED.  I think Colombiana will have the best chance to make a splash at the box office this week.  Something odd did happen at the box office last weekend.  A movie that had not previously been the #1 movie in America took the #1 spot.  Recently True Grit and the Blind Side did this.  It all speaks to the quality of The Help.  Because of this feat I am more inclined to check it out.  It has to be good.

Win WinRated R
Win Win
A down on his luck attorney (Paul Giamatti) uses a high school wrestling team as his ticket to happiness.  A movie about Wrestling?  I am there.  Critics loved this so I can’t help but think I will love it.  Mostly due to the wrestling

The BeaverRated PG-13
The Beaver
Mel Gibson has a mental break down and then starts to communicate to a Beaver puppet.  Yeah that’s actually what this movie is about.  Critics agree with me, The plot is too out there to take anything in this film seriously.

Pom Wonderful Present: The Greatest Movie Ever SoldRated PG-13
The Greatest Movie Ever Sold
Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) takes a look at the world of product placement.  This film was entire funded by movie placements.  That makes my eyes cross.  Spurlock is a great film maker and I am looking forward to viewing this movie.

Next week Tyler Perry makes loads of money on DVD sales with another Madea movie, Sharks on steroids, and a trip to the moon.  But it doesn’t look like it is going to be fun.
