This Week In Movies 11-5-10

This week in Movies or finally some variety in the theatres

So this week instead of one new movie in theatres we get three.  Three very different movies that are for three very different demographics.  Lets not waste time and get to it

Megamind

Director: Tom McGrath

Stars: Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Brad Pitt
Rated PG

The Plot: Megamind (Ferrell) is the most brilliant super-villain the world has ever known, though after several unsuccessful attempts to conquer Metro City, a new foe sees him attempt -- for the first time in his life -- to use his powers for good.

Mac D’s Thoughts – From a purely business stand point Megamind should do very well.  A lot of advertising behind it and nothing for children in the last month or so in theatres means a lot of kids will beg their parents to take them to the movies.  The voice cast is stellar led by Will Farrell.  This is new territory for Ferrel as I don’t believe he has ever been in a children’s animated movie before.  I want to see this but I have no kids.

Verdict – If I had children or nieces or nephews old enough to take to the movies I would drag them to this.  Since I don’t I will have to wait for DVD.

Due Date

Director: Todd Phillips
Stars: Robert Downey jr., Zach Galifianakis, Michelle Monaghan
Rated: R

The Plot: High-strung father-to-be Peter Highman (Downey Jr.) is forced to hitch a ride with aspiring actor Ethan Tremblay (Galifianakis) on a road trip in order to make it to his child's birth on time.

Mac D’s Thoughts – This is Todd Phillips follow up to The Hangover.  IT has Robert Downy Jr in it so I have high expectations to the quality of this film.  Of course Zach Galifianakis is also in this to make the expectations even higher.  More than likely I will be let down.  I don’t expect this to set the world on fire but I do expect two hours of fun.

Verdict – Most likey to been seen in the theatre by me

For Colored Girls
Director: Tyler Perry

Stars: Janet Jackson, Anika Noni Rose, Whoopi Goldberg

Rated R

The Plot: A drama centered on a group of black women whose lives and experiences intersect at a 12-step healing program.

Mac D’s Thoughts – This is a direct 360 from what Tyler Perry is known for.  This is a serious film dealing with very serious women’s issues.  This is a slight gamble for Perry but I know his fan base comes out to see his movies.  Early reviews are not that kind but I would still give it a shot.

Verdict – Might be one of the more profound movies since the summer and will be worth a look at some point.

Now some entertainment on the home front.

DVD

Toy Story 3

The same reasons I won’t be seeing Megamind any time soon is the same reason I have yet to see Toy Story 3.  I will be getting this on DVD to watch as it is one of the biggest movies of the year and it’s a Pixar movie.  I haven’t see a Pixar movie yet that I haven’t thoroughly enjoyed.

The Pacific the Complete series

This is the companion series to Band of Brothers.  I have seen most of this series which is set during the Marine campaign in the Pacific for WW2.  Less action heavy then Band of Brothers didn’t mean it was any less amazing.  There are several aspects of the Pacific campaign that I never knew about.  This is worth several viewings.

V- The Complete First Season

I am not really sure why I am hooked on the new version of V.  It is not well acted.  But the conspiracy keeps me in.  Well sort of.  I have yet to see last season’s finale.  I am excited for original cast members return this upcoming season but answer me this: Where is Robert Englund?

Goonies 25th anniversary edition

Goonies never say die.  And now they never say die on Blu Ray.  There are new special features, I think.  Some other goodies but you just want to see Sloth in HD.

That’s it for this week.  We have a transformers rip off and Denzel on a train to look forward to.  But the threat of Harry Potter clouds the future.
