Dog Bite Prevention (Proper Petting Protocol)

by Sean Stevens

How many times have you been walking your dog when a child in the neighborhood approaches and reaches out to pet your dog without asking you first?  This can be disasterous!  Even if your dog is friendly and social, they may be startled or afraid and act out in an unordinary way by growling or worse yet by biting.

When walking your dog, always be aware of your surroundings and if someone approaches you, be prepared to step between them and your dog.  There are over 4 million dog bites every year in the U.S. and half of those are kids under 12 years old.

There is an appropriate way to greet a dog that you do not know.  Every child should be taught these rules for safety.  Here's what you and your children need to know.
