Movie Trailer Friday

by Matt Z

This weekends headliner is The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire and Joel Edgerton.  The movie looks to be quite a spectacle and for some ridiculous reason is in 3D.  3D films annoy me, for the most part.  It's rare that the use of 3D adds anything significant to the overall feel of a film.  There are exceptions to my rule of course with Avatar and Life of Pi being the most recent ones.  I just feel that 3D is mainly a gimmick and a way to overly hype a movie and drive up ticket prices.  Director Baz Luhrmann also directed Moulin Rouge and Australia, neither of which left me wanting more.  There's been a lot of promotion for Gatsby but the critics haven't been all that kind.  Recently the hype machine has started really pimping the soundtrack to the film as a major selling point and if the soundtrack turns out to be better than the movie, it doesn't bode well for Leo and the rest.

Peeples starring Craig Robinson and Kerry Washington is the other wide release this weekend.  It's a Tyler Perry produced flick.

Here are other movies opening this weekend:

I am most excited to see Sightseers.  It might just be me but if Eli Roth doesn't kill a Nazi with a baseball bat in Aftershock, what's the point???
