In celebration of Father’s Day, it seems only fitting to raise a toast to those rockers who have mastered the delicate balance between juggling a successful career in the unpredictable music industry while still being No. 1 Dad at home.
While it may seem hard to conjure up images of some of rock and metal’s most infamous contributors at home behind the scenes changing diapers and raising babies, let the record show that this list of rockers seem to have risen to the challenge.
Strangely enough, while many of these rock dads admit to not steering their children towards music, their offspring have found themselves drawn to the arts anyway – it must be in the genes!
Shawn ‘Clown’ Crahan
– Awesome Rock Dads
“He was sitting on the stairs in diapers wearing my mask with sticks while we were downstairs trying to learn how to be a band,” explains Crahan. “When I leave, it won’t be like I died and my son came in and tried to fill my place. I’m gonna bail, but I’m gonna hand over the throne and say, ‘Hey, I can’t do it anymore. You do it. You’re my blood.”
Crahan, now the father of four children, also recently commented that
he shed tears when seeing Gage record music with his own band, stating,
“Watching my son sing was so personal and real it made me so proud.”
Jacoby Shaddix – Awesome Rock Dads
In an interview with Loudwire, Shaddix said, “I try to let them experience the different sides of life. They get their jock on, they get their band geek on, they get their freak on and weird out, listen to metal and go crazy.”
Backstage at Rock on the Range in May, 8-year-old Jagger even took his best shot at singing the lead vocal to the Papa Roach tune ‘Still Swingin’ during an interview, check it out here.
Shaddix recently confirmed on Twitter that he and his wife are currently expecting their third child and it’s another boy, so congrats to the Shaddix family!
Ozzy Osbourne – Awesome Rock Dads
Ozzy Osbourne became the world’s most watched rock dad when he invited TV viewers into his home on his MTV reality show ‘The Osbournes.’
Known as the ‘Prince of Darkness’ throughout his music career, the show offered fans an intimate look at a completely different side of Ozzy, and his loving yet off-the-wall relationship Kelly and Jack, two of his five biological children (Ozzy and Sharon also helped raise a child named Robert).
It’s hard to believe that the show wrapped up way back in 2005 but
with Jack welcoming his first child into the world recently, Osbourne
now has six grandchildren, as well.
Nikki Sixx – Awesome Rock Dads
While Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx’s harrowing autobiography ‘The Heroin Diaries’ shared his intense struggles with his family growing up, it seems that Sixx has taken everything he learned from his past and applied it towards being a great dad for his own four children.
Sixx recently clued fans in to his eldest son Gunner’s musical project called Figs Vision, stating, “I have been very open about creativity and supporting music over the years in my books and blogs. As a father you hope to pass this on to your kids.”
Sixx seems to be a beacon of love for his rock n’ roll brood. Anyone that follows Sixx on Twitter has seen him talk about shopping trips with one of his daughters or missing his family out on the road, making him a true rock star to his kids.
Max Cavalera – Awesome Rock Dads
Soulfly’s Max Cavalera admits that he was a little surprised when his son Richie showed interest in pursuing a career in music but it ended up working to his advantage. Cavalera recruited the collective talents of his three sons to contribute to a handful of songs on Soulfly’s latest disc ‘Enslaved.’
The musical collaborations with his sons didn’t stop there though. Richie’s band Incite and his sons Igor and Zyon’s band Lody Kong spent some time out on the road opening for Soulfly.
Cavalera has been nothing but supportive of his sons’ passions. “I feel very happy that they are going in this direction, so that’s why I tried to make the song with them in the studio,” said Cavalera. “I knew that they had the ability to play and take it to a professional level.”
Slash – Awesome Rock Dads
We included former Guns N’ Roses guitarist and current solo star Slash on our list of awesome rock dads for a very simple reason — the website of the photo service we use for our stories is absolutely packed with pictures of him and his sons attending a variety of fantastic, kid-friendly events.
Movie premieres? Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards ceremonies? Lollapalooza? London and Cash, who were born in 2002 and 2004 to Slash and his wife Perla Ferrar, have seen ‘em all. By the way guys, we hope you’re not too freaked out that we included your mother on our list of the hottest rockstar wives.
Eddie Van Halen – Awesome Rock Dads
Some fans still lament the loss of original bassist Michael Anthony, but it’s pretty tough to argue that Wolfgang isn’t earning his own place in Van Halen. As his mother, actress Valerie Bertinelli declared in a recent interview, without her son’s energy and organization Van Halen may not have gotten back together for their 2012 album and tour.
As Eddie himself puts it, “Every once in a while when we’re playing, I’ll look over at him and be so damn proud. I just get such a proud feeling being on stage with my son.” The guitarist also named ’316,’ an instrumental song from the group’s 1991 album ‘For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge’ after Wolfgang’s birthday.
Tommy Lee – Awesome Rock Dads
How cool must it be to have an awesome rock dad like Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee? Let’s think about all the benefits his now-teenage sons Brandon and Dylan enjoy: First off, as you can see from this recent photo, the pair clearly got their father’s good looks. (Of course, mom Pamela Anderson probably deserves some credit, too.)
Second, we’d have to assume they got first crack at a ride on their dad’s famous drum coaster. But most importantly, judging from this photo (featuring a young Brandon) and the lyrics to Lee’s 2007 ballad ‘Brandon,’ the drummer is completely unafraid to look goofy or wear his heart on his sleeve in order to make sure his kids know he loves them.
Gene Simmons – Awesome Rock Dads
After all, their awesome rock dad can transform into a seven-foot tall, blood-spitting, high-flying, fire-breathing lord of the wasteland. He’s also a loving father who’s deeply invested in raising his kids with the values that helped him become such a success in both the rock and business worlds, as the family’s ‘Gene Simmons Family Jewels’ television series demonstrated quite clearly.
Sammy Hagar – Awesome Rock Dads
The benefits of having an awesome rock dad such as Sammy Hagar should be readily apparent. Obviously, between his successful solo career and stints in Van Halen and Chickenfoot, not to mention his multi-million dollar tequila empire, you’re gonna be able to hit him up for a few bucks every now and then. Also, there’s no way he can keep track of all of those fancy cars in his collection at all times.
Jokes aside, anyone who reads Hagar’s recent autobiography is bound
to be struck by the importance he places on sharing time with his
family, which includes two sons (Aaron and Andrew) from his first
marriage and daughters Kama and Samantha with current wife Kari.
Travis Barker – Awesome Rock Dads
Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker’s second marriage, to actress and former Miss USA runner-up Shanna Moakler, didn’t pan out, but he certainly has something to show for it: two rad little rug rats named Landon Asher and Alabama Luella. (The girl pictured left is Atiana Cecilia de la Hoya, Moakler’s daughter with former boyfriend Oscar de la Hoya.) Before the couple split, the family of five was featured on the MTV reality show ‘Meet the Barkers,’ which gave the world a chance to see just how awesome of a dad Barker is.
If you missed ‘Meet the Barkers,’ check out this YouTube clip of Travis showing his awesome-dad bona fides while hanging with baby Landon, who just so happens to be sporting an awesome baby mohawk. Like father, like son!By LoudWire.Com
