Should Bacon be our national food?

by Otis Day

Bacon sales in the U.S. have increased in each of the last four years.

And a survey by pork supplier Smithfield found that 65 percent of Americans would support the idea of making bacon our "national food."

This bacon boom has taken many forms, beginning with varieties of strip bacon like thick-cut, thin-cut, specialty smoked, peppered and more. On top of that, there's new products on store shelves or on restaurant menus, like bacon and chocolate, bacon and booze, or bacon and ice cream.

And if you're really into bacon, there are bacon-themed restaurants in New York and Chicago and bacon-themed festivals. There's also a bacon film festival in New York, organized by bacon giant Hormel.
