  • The Slamcast: WWE Monday Night Raw (9/10/12)

    Posted by Mac D

This week World Champion Sheamus vs David Otunga, WWE Champion CM Punk vs Randy Orton, and Bret "The Hitman" Hart interviews John Cena and CM Punk

The big news coming out of Raw is the health condition of Jerry "The King" Lawler.  He suffered what we now know is a heart attack during the Daniel Bryan and Kane vs Prime Time Players match.  A very real and very serious heart attack.  As I sat and watch I noticed there was no commentary until Michael Cole ,who was visibly shaken up, told us that Lawler had passed out and not much was known.  The last 45 minutes of Raw was brutal.  I cared more about Jerry's condition then what was going on on TV.  I was reminded repeatedly of Owen Hart during 1999's Over The Edge.  The show had the same kind of vibe.  The wrestlers seemed like they shaken up but were professionals and marched on.  Luckily as of right now Jerry is in cardiac ICU and is doing better.  How knows how long it will be before The King shows up on our TV screens again.  My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Jerry "The King" Lawler.

This week David Cronenberg screws with my mind, Bradley Cooper writes a book, and BOOBIES!!

These are the movies released in theaters Friday September 7th, 2012.
    BrandedRated R
    http://i.imgur.com/qfWiW.jpg
In the near feature a man fights super corporations that have taken over the world.  So this is a sci fi movie about the evils of commercialism and capitalism.  In the political and economic environment I wonder if the message of Branded will be too heavy handed, especially because the helmers are very inexperienced.

Verdict – My cautious attitude will not stop me from seeing this.  I don’t know anything about Branded and it may work in its favor.

The Cold Light Of DayRated PG-13
    The Cold Light Of Day
Henry Cavill’s family is abducted during a trip to Spain and it all has to do with a briefcase in Henry’s possession.  I want to see this movie for one reason; Henry Cavill’s next film MAN OF STEEL.  That’s right the male lead of The Cold Light Of Day is the next Superman.  I do not have Showtime to see him in Tudor’s so I will have to settle for this movie.  Add in supporting roles by Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver and we have a good thriller.

Verdict – This one might go under the radar but with the cast it has to be entertaining.

    CosmopolisRated R
    Cosmopolis
Robert Pattinson is a millionaire who goes crazy.  No this isn’t a remake of American Psycho.  This is the latest movie from David Cronenberg (The Fly, Videodrome,).  Sure his recent work (A History of Violence and Crash) won’t haunt your dreams but Cosmopolis is a throwback to the 80’s.  All that Cronenberg did to us in The Fly will be done again but this time with Edward Cullen.

Verdict – If this can actually be considered a horror movie, it will be the best horror movie of the year.  It’s David Cronenberg so it will be engrossing and confusing.

    The WordsRated PG-13
    The Words
Bradley Cooper steals some papers from Jeremy Irons and it could have lead to Cooper’s new bestseller.  Knowing the basic plot makes watching the trailer confusing.  For me it seems like there might be too many plot lines going on to figure out what’s happening.  Which is sad because a Bradley Cooper & Jeremy Irons thriller seems like a winner.

Verdict – I hope this isn’t overwhelming.  If it is this will be terrible.

    5. ParaNorman - Rated PG - $8,833,439 ($40,312,625)
Movie – Rating – Weekend Domestic Gross (Total Domestic Gross)

The big thing to point out here is the opening of Oogieloves in the BIG Balloon Adventure, which bombed.  I think the phrase “Bomb” is too nice.  It was destroyed, obliterated, other big words.   The Oogieloves opened up at around $400,000.  I also averaged $206 a theater,  That is the lowest average of all time.  For comparison The Possession averaged $7,485.  The director thinks that these Oogieloves will do better on DVD.  They better hope a lot better.

  • Mac D's Weekend Movie Guide (8/31/12)

    Posted by Mac D

Labor Day weekend means the end of the blockbuster/ summer movie season.  I wondered before now if The Dark Knight Rises was going to be able to defeat The Avengers in all marks and unfortunately for Batman, The Avengers out earned it at every turn.  The Avengers is the big winner this summer.  As we move to fall we get to look forward to a new Judge Dredd, Frankenweenie (the new stop motion film from Tim Burton), Tyler Perry’s take on Alex Cross (Perry is only acting which is very interesting),  Taken 2, and the return of James Bond in Skyfall.  I love the fall season for its risky films.  I hope some of those risks pay off.  But the last weekend of the summer brings us Tom Hardy as a moonshine runner, another possession movie, and a board game movie adaptation on film.

These are the movies released in theaters Wednesday August, 29th, 2012.
    Lawless - Rated R
    Lawless
Three brothers (Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, and Jason Clarke) have a bootlegging business in 1930’s West Virginia.  This business is threatened by Guy Pearce and Gary Oldman.  This film is based on a true story.  Is this a action flick?  Is this a drama?  I can’t tell by the trailers.  It doesn’t matter.  I do not hate Shia LeBouf like everyone else so I am more inclined to think his skills will be in full effect if there is some dramatic scenes mixed with lots of gun shooting.  Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, and Guy Pearce will make Lawless better than it should.

Verdict - Is this the last summer blockbuster or a drama coming in under the wire?  I don’t care, I still want to see Lawless.

Oogiesloves In The Big Balloon Adventure - Rated G
Oogiesloves In The Big Balloon Adventure
I understood three words in that title.  I am not going to try to BS my way through this.  I have no idea what this is.  I looked it up and this is from one of the gentlemen who produced the Telletubbies.  When he couldn’t make a Telletubbie movie like he wanted to make he made the Oogiesloves.  So it’s full size puppets.  The audience is encouraged to interact with the characters like they would on Dora the Explorer or something like that.  Out of the box thinking did not work for Spy Kids 4D and I don't think it will work here.

Verdict - I don’t like talking during a normal movie I would loathe it during a kids movie.

These are the movies released in theaters Friday August, 31st, 2012.
Celeste and Jesse Forever - Rated R
    Celeste And Jesse Forever
Finally a movie about divorce.   Rashida Jones and Andy Sandberg are getting a divorce but still act like best friends.  This leads to all sorts of problems.  I would think with the talent of the leads (Well at lest Jones) this will be watchable.  The plot could lead to some overly dramatic moments which would spell doom from Sandberg.

Verdict - A date movie those with a weird dark sense of humor.  Good think I have a weird dark sense of humor.

    The Possession - Rated PG-13
    The Possession
A young girl unknowingly purchased a Dybbuk Box (Its a jewish spirit in a box)  Her newly divorced parents Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick try to help her as the Demon takes control.  Sam Raimi produces this twist on the Exorcist formula.  Outside of a box, I don’t see anything that would separate this from every other possession horror movie that has come out in the last 30 years.

Verdict - Hopefully there is some surprise to make this enjoyable.  I do not think The Possession will make any mark or leave any impression.

Box Office Top 5 Movies In The Country
    1. The Expendables 2 - Rated R - $13,423,579 ($52,237,523)
    2. The Bourne Legacy - Rated PG-13 - $9,336,005 ($85,522,220)
    3. ParaNorman - Rated PG - $8,639,288 ($28,261,577)
    4. The Campaign - Rated R - $7,472,397 ($64,575,569)
    5. The Dark Knight Rises - Rated PG-13- $7,222,317 ($422,255,218
Movie – Rating – Weekend Domestic Gross (Total Domestic Gross)

So The Expendables 2 is making money.  That is not the surprising part.  The shock is that all movies that came out last weekend bombed.  BAD.  Premium Rush took #8 making around $5 Million bucks.  WOW.  Lawless probably will take #1 without effort.

    Battleship - Rated PG-13
    Battleship
G9.  YOU SUNK MY BATTLESHIP!!!  I can’t get over the Alien component to this movie.  They could have made a better Battleship film and just make it a Naval war film.  Curse you Battleship.  You are the reason I didn’t get to see The Rock in a G.I. Joe movie this year.

Next week man eating fish ruin a sex filled weekend, Bradley Cooper steals another man’s book, and some stuff I have never heard of.

  • The Adventures of Mac D and Paper Jason Hanson

    Posted by Mac D

I recently was emailed some instructions to make Paper Lions. Tiny little Lion's players that you can put on your desk, sleep with (NOT IN THAT WAY), or use as a hood ornament. They are from the Detroit Free Press and can be found here.  This is what they look like
    Paper Lions Pic
    Matthew Stafford CHECK
    Calvin Johnson CHECK
    Ndamukong Suh CHECK
Jason Hanson WHAT!! NO JASON HANSON!?!?!?!

How could the creators of such great items forget the greats Lion of the past, present, and future: #4 Jason Hanson!?!?  I think the NFL should just give the Lion’s three points every time the ball touches his foot.  HERESY I CRY!  Like most people of my age range, I went to the Internet and posted an angry comment.
    Mac D Facebook Screenshot
Wait what?  When I complain on the Internet I get what I want?  I will remember this for the next time my Craiglist date turns out to be a dude.  Well I waited until nightfall to create the most perfect paper Lion.
    Introducing Paper Jason Hanson
There he is; Paper Jason Hanson.  Though tiny, Paper Jason Hanson can still kick 60 yard field goal and steal your girlfirend at the same time  After I created Paper Jason Hanson we went off for adventures.
    Paper Jason Hanson On Air
I first let him on the air which is a very bad idea because all he wanted to talk about was kicking field goals.  I told him that you can only talk about the fine subtle art of the field goal kicking for 2 hours. Upon hearing this Paper Jason Hanson kicked me in the knee.  I still limp to this day.
Paper Jason Hanson Eats A Taco
After that we stopped for taco’s because a hour of broadcasting gives you a mighty hunger. Jason Hason ate 18.  Paper Jason Hanson calls Taco's "field goal kicking fuel".
    Paper Jason Hanson Plays Halo
After that we played several games of Halo.  Paper Jason Hanson totally pwned me.
Paper Jason Hanson, Paper NDamukong Suh, and Batman
Paper Jason Hanson then got out his phone and called his pals Paper Ndamukong Suh and Batman.  The four of us painted the town red.  Kegs were tapped, Trash can mysteriously disappeared, and hearts were broken.  Those guys picked up 3 chicks each and I got tazed.
Paper Jason Hanson kicks a 60 yard field goal
And of course he kicked several 60 yard field goals on my desk.

Over all I have created a lifelong friend.  As long as Jason Hanson gives me some of his leftovers Sunday morning we will be fine.

If you want to create your own Paper Lion click the link here.  I hope you make a friend like I did.  Though I wouldn’t let Paper Jason Hanson near his teammates.  They might rise up against you under Paper Jason Hanson’s superior leadership.

This week a look into the future, badass bike riding, and Borat takes over a country

These are the movies released in theaters Friday August, 24th 2012.
    2016: Obama’s AmericaRated PG
    2016: Obama's America
Political Commentator Dinesh D’Souza takes a look at America if President Barak Obama gets a second term and also looks at the past of the current US President.  Most documentaries are very slanted towards the point of the view of the filmmaker.  Some are so heavy handed that it drags the film down.  Due to the current political climate I can’t see how this movie is not horribly influenced by D’Souza’s political beliefs regardless if they are Liberal or Conservative.

Verdict – I think this film is more intriguing after the election but most films like this are trying to beat the clock of November.

    The ApparitionRated PG-13
    The Apparition
Ashley Greene (Some chick from the Twilight series) and Sebastian Stan (Bucky from Captain America) find out they have a ghost.  Their last hope is a supernatural expert Tom Fenton (MOTHER F’N DRACO MALFOY from the Harry Potter Series) this seems to be aimed at the teen audience.  It is a very standard ghost horror movie.  I have seen too many horror films to think this will be scary at all.  But I hope Stan and Fenton will make this entertaining.

Verdict – I might check this out when I am not surrounded by rowdy teens.

    Hit and RunRated R
    Hit & Run
Dax Shepard leaves the Witness Protection Program to help Kristen Bell to get to L.A.  He is being chased by Bradley Cooper, Tom Arnold and others.  I have never had much faith in Dax Shepard to give me anything hilarious.  This looks like the same from him.

    Verdict – I will pass.

    Premium RushRated PG-13
    Premium Rush
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is being chased around New York City by a dirty cop but Gordon-Levitt IS ON A BIKE.  The Dark Knight Rises show me something that I that was true: Joseph Gordon-Levitt can do action.  Premium Rush will show us he is leading man material for Action Films.  I looks good but will probably be under the radar due to the Expendables 2.

Verdict – I want to see Expendables 2 before this but Premium Rush looks like a sleeper hit.

The Expendables 2 did well but not as well as the original.  They are already talking about 3 but I wonder if its too early to say there will be a sequel.

    The DictatorRated R
    The Dictator
Sacha Baron Cohen stars as a Dictator who’s Uncle is trying to oust him via murder.  More of a renter for me, I hope this stands up to Borat or anything Baron Cohen has done that he hasn’t written himself.

Next week another Sam Rami produced Horror movie, someone sunk a boat I liked, and moonshiners.
