From the Mind of Mac D

I saw Jack Reacher on Christmas day with tons of other people.  Reacher was ok.  There was enough twists in the plot to keep me from figuring everything out before it happened.  Tom Cruise elevated this from “Meh” to “Good”.  He is so much fun to watch in thrillers/action films. 7.5/10

These are the movies released in theaters Tuesday December 25th, 2012.
    Django UnchainedRated R
    Django Unchained
Jamie Foxx teams up with a bounty hunter Christoph Waltz to rescue his wife from Leonardo DiCaprio.  Yes I have already seen this.  Waltz is so much fun to watch.  He is hilarious at most of the time but shows us glimpses of the characters true grit in others.  I wonder if Jamie Foxx will get more action films due to Django.  However Leonardo Dicaprio wins for best performance.  He has officially redeemed himself in my eyes (I have held a grudge over Titanic for too long).  I want Leo to play the villain more often.  An added gem is Samuel L Jackson is awesome, yelling profanities at everyone.  I expected this from Quentin Tarantino.  I was beyond entertained.  The only drawback is the movie is about 20 minutes too long.  165 minute run time is long and it feels like it towards the end.

    Verdict - 9/10

    Les Miserables Rated PG-13
    Les Miserables
Based on a novel and a musical, Les Mis is about Hugh Jackman trying to turn his life around and several other characters.  Every person who loves the theatre loves Les Mis but me.  The truth is I have never seen the stage musical.  But the cast which includes Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, and Amanda Seyfried intrigues me.

Verdict - I am not much for musicals but at some point I may give Les Miserables a try.

    Parental GuidanceRated PG
    Parental Guidance
Billy Crystal and Bette Midler are watching their grand kids in a battle of old school vs new school.  We no longer live in the 90’s, so I don’t expect laughs from Crystal or Midler.

Verdict - I bet I would only laugh 5 times watching Parental Guidance.  I would rather watch Django Unchained again.

I saw the Hobbit on IMax on 3D.  It was good. But not as good as any of The Lord Of The Rings Movies.  I thought that several parts dragged out way too long.  However lots of the movie felt familiar and I enjoyed myself. It also hurt that as a large man, my legs were bent at a perfect 90 degree angle for 3 hours and they hurt. 8/10

These are the movies released in theaters Wednesday December 19th, 2012.
    Guilt Trip- Rated PG-13

Seth Rogen is off to make the sell of his life, so on his cross coutnry trip he brings his mom, Barbra Streisand.  A sex comedy with Babs?  ehh no.  While this might be a good idea, Seth Rogen hasn’t starred in anything in a long time that has been entertaining.  Plus I do not have faith in Barbra Streisand to carry a movie like this.  It’s not a drama.

Verdict - There will be an audience for this movie but I am not in it.

    Monsters, Inc 3DRated G

This story of two monsters protecting a small girl is in 3D.  Disney’s re-release of Pixar’s films in 3D are fine.  They might not make much money gut they are fun to watch.

Verdict - I have never seen Monsters Inc.  Perhaps I should in 3D

These are the movies released in theaters Wednesday December 19th, 2012.
    Jack ReacherRated PG-13

Tom Cruise stars as a former Military Policy office trying to help out a framed Army Sharpshooter.  I have always found Tom Cruise more enjoyable when he is doing straight action movies.  This semi-cop movie looks entertaining but are there enough pieces for this to be good.  Its going to take more than Tom Cruise to push Jack Reacher beyond average.

Verdict - Entertaining yes, but I don’t think this is good enough to get a pass to the front of the line.

    This is 40Rated R

Some of the characters from the great Knocked Up return as Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann turn 40.  This is Director Judd Apatow’s follow up to Funny People.  Apatow has always made us laugh and cry at the same time.  I am up in the air about this.  Especially after reading reviews complaining about it’s length.  Rudd was hillarious in Knocked Up so this might follow suit.

Verdict - I do feel a strong personal connection to this films as I have with his past work but I still think this will work

    Playing For Keeps
Gerard Butler is a former Soccer star who has fallen on hard times.  He goes and coaches his sons Soccer team and starts hitting on Soccer moms.  That leads him to Jessica Biel.  I think I am going to hurl.

Verdict - I am going to watch Skyfall again.
